BSPNTX Announces 2024-25 Scholarships Recipients

DALLAS – The National Society of Black Sports Professionals North Texas (BSPNTX) announces its 2024-25 scholarships recipients.


A single-year high 12 students with North Texas ties are set to receive a single-year record distribution of $25,000 in scholarships – $20,500 to nine BSPNTX Leadership Scholarships recipients and $4,500 to three BSPNTX Community Scholarships recipients – during the current academic year.


Caleb Wilborn ($3,500), a doctoral student from Lubbock, Texas, and Andrew Christmas ($3,000), a graduate student from Plano, Texas, both pursuing degrees at the University of North Texas, earned the top BSPNTX Leadership Scholarships.


Carrington Casteel, an Ovilla, Texas, native pursuing his bachelor's degree at Dallas Baptist University, is being awarded a BSPNTX scholarship for the second year in a row, garnering a $2,000 Leadership Scholarship after receiving a Community Scholarship a year ago. Casteel is one of seven receiving a $2,000 BSPNTX Leadership Scholarship, joining Kase Carrera, Anecia Coleman, Jihra Hill, Nick Nakwaasah, Gabrielle Pippins and Le'Brittany Smith.


Michael Malone III, a Murphy, Texas, native pursuing his master’s degree at North Texas, is receiving a BSPNTX scholarship for the fourth straight year. He has three Community Scholarships to his credit after earning a Leadership Scholarship as an inaugural recipient in 2021-22. Malone is one of three recipients receiving a $1,500 BSPNTX Community Scholarship, joining Alexandria Davis and Cameron Marzell.


The chapter's 2024-25 distribution in the fourth year of its scholarships initiative brings its total to $69,500 in dollars distributed to fund 38 scholarships for 33 college students with North Texas ties striving to be among the next generation of professionals with careers in the sports industry.

• Andrew Christmas (Graduate Student, Plano, Texas) – Sport Entertainment Management at the University of North Texas

• Anecia Coleman (Graduate Student, Dallas, Texas) – Sport Entertainment Management at the University of North Texas

• Jihra Hill (Sophomore, Euless, Texas) – Sports Medicine & Exercise Physiology and History at Rice University

• Nick Nakwaasah (Graduate Student, Richardson, Texas) – Sport Entertainment Management at the University of North Texas

• Gabrielle Pippins (Junior, Dallas, Texas) – Sports Journalism at the University of North Texas

• Le'Brittany Smith (Graduate Student, Arlington, Texas) – Legal Studies at the Texas A&M University School of Law

• Caleb Wilborn (Doctoral Student, Lubbock, Texas) – Counseling Psychology (Sport Psychology Concentration) at the University of North Texas


2024-25 BSPNTX Community Scholarships Recipients

• Alexandria Davis (Junior, Dallas, Texas) – Psychology at North Carolina A&T State University

• Michael Malone III (Graduate Student, Murphy, Texas) – Sport Entertainment Management at the University of North Texas at the University of North Texas

• Cameron Marzell (Senior, Irving, Texas) – Sport Management (Business Concentration) at Texas Southern University


Applicants for this year's BSPNTX scholarships had to meet the criteria of 1) being a college sophomore, junior, senior or graduate student at a college or university in the greater North Texas area or being a North Texas-area native pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in sport management (or sports-related field of study) area, 2) maintaining a current GPA of 3.0 or higher to be considered for a Leadership Scholarship or 2.5 or higher to be considered for a Community Scholarship and 3) submitting a written essay of 500 words or less.


"Our chapter really prides itself on the impact our scholarships have on students trying to complete their degrees and prepare themselves for the next chapters of their lives," said BSPNTX Scholarships Committee Chair Cherise Lee. "Making a record distribution to a record number of student shows the power of BSPNTX and our unwavering commitment to helping identify and cultivate the next generation looking to chart their paths in the sports industry."
